Our ESL Students and Their Amazing Growth!
September 22, 2016
Each year ESL (English as Second Language) students take the WIDA ACCESS test, a test for students in grades K-12, testing their proficiency in the English language. In order to exit an ESL program, students must score at least a 5.0 (on a 6 point scale) on this test.
The state of Tennessee has a goal to have a 10% exit rate for ESL students each year based on the WIDA scores. For the 2015-2016 school year, Cornerstone Prep Lester had a 30% exit rate! The exit rate reflects that ESL students have progressed far enough in their language development that they should be independently successful in the classroom with their native English speaking peers. Once students exit, they do not receive ESL services regularly but are still monitored by our ESL teachers.
We are incredibly proud of our ESL students and their hard work!
