Educator Highlight: Brooke DeBoard

Over the next several days, we will be highlighting educators in our schools. Today we meet Brooke DeBoard, a Kindergarten teacher at Cornerstone Prep Denver, and learn why she values be a part of the CPD team.

We asked Ms. DeBoard a few questions, and here is what she had to say:

Why do you like working at Cornerstone Prep Denver? I like working here because I believe that the school leaders and the teachers care about the whole child. Their concern is beyond just test scores and extends to the training, teaching, and growing of students in a holistic way.

How have you grown during your time at CPD? One of the biggest areas of growth that I have had as an educator here at Cornerstone Prep Denver has been the shift away from me doing the heavy thinking to the students doing the majority of the work. It is very common for teachers to tell kids how to solve problems and reach the end goal. It is much more difficult for teachers to allow students to wrestle with problems in order to discover the correct process on their own. The second approach has a much stronger impact on a student and helps develop their problem solving skills more deeply.

What would you say to educators considering a teaching position at this school? Urban education is difficult work, but it is one of the most rewarding jobs you can have. Urban education is a social injustice issue and students that attend these schools deserve a quality education. I would encourage anyone with a passion or an interest in participating in this cause to get connected to CPD.
